The famous brand isn’t it!
Though every dog owner has heard this name, Pedigree has some bad reviews as well.
Product does not provides enough nutrition to your pup with 20% Protein, 10% Crude Fat & 5% Crude Fiber.
Pedigree do contain corn as their primary ingredients, which is cheaper source of carbohydrate. It is said to not overfeed corn to any dog.

Why can't I feed my dog home-made food?
After going through our list, you may have thought, “Why can’t I just feed my dog home-made food?”
This is the question each one of us goes through.
Don’t worry, as we were in your shoes once. Being a first time dog parent could be confusing!
Let’s start with the basics then.
You must understand that a dog’s digestive system is very different from a human’s.
We have seen many dog owners feeding homemade food (mostly rice & milk) to their dogs.
Let’s be straight, these foods are enough to fill up a dog’s belly but won’t fulfill their nutrition requirement.
A dog’s body requires protein for the good development & maintenance of the muscles.
And this protein is also crucial in the growth stage and help pups with the new muscle development.
Now here’s a twist.
We humans could get proteins from various vegetarian sources as well like Paneer, Milk, Soya-bean, etc.
But for dogs these proteins are somewhat (not completely) useless as their body couldn’t use it due to having a carnivore digestive system. A carnivore cannot strive well on plant proteins.
A best dog food satisfies all the protein needs of a dog with their animal based protein only.
Yet, many dog food manufacturers include plant proteins into their ingredients.
This significantly increases the crude protein stats of the product which companies could proudly promote.
However, plant protein contains less biological value.
Customers who know the benefits of the protein will happily buy the product based on the crude proteins percentage.
But, it won’t do that much good to their dog.
While there won’t be any short-term consequences for this, it will surely harm your dog in longer term.
So investing in good dog food is a very important job.
Beside this, do you know that there are many foods we eat like onion & garlic that could be dangerous to our dogs & should be avoided?
For more info on those foods, check our article on Toxic dog food.
Is there any home-made dog food option?
Yes, there is!
Cooking your own dog food isn’t that tough! However, you must have a good knowledge about the food that are safe for your dog.
Just a little work and you could be the world’s greatest chef for your dog.
Start by boiling chicken to remove any parasite or bacteria like salmonella.
Complement the meal with one whole boiled or scrambled eggs.
Add up to 50% of any of the above dog food into that meal as it contains important additives like Omega 3 & 6 oil (good for coats), Oats, Turmeric, etc.
You could also check other dog food recipes here.
Remember adding fish oil to your dog food is important as the Omega 3 & 6 we talk about is richly present in it. If you have a breed like Huskies, German Shepherd having a dense coat then fish oil is could be beneficiary.
By feeding your dog this kind of home-made food, you protect them from various issues like joint pain, weaker bone, heart disease, breathing issues, kidney failure, and many other health problems.
Tricks to choose the best dog food
Now, we have already listed our recommendation.
However, finding top dog food in India is not that difficult if you know the trick.
It is possible that in any other platform or market, you may come across a very appealing offer on some new dog food.
Then this technique will surely help you to decide if the dog food is worth buying.
It is very crucial for you to read the dog food ingredients, to know what you are going to feed your dog.
If the product doesn’t clearly mention any ingredients on its label then know that it mostly contains fillers for sure, as companies aren’t proud of what they are making.
This is just a cost effective product for people looking for a cheaper dog food option.
Some of the ingredients that you should be looking for are,
- Animal Protein Source like meat, chicken, fish, duck, quail, etc (not by-products)
- Complex Carbs (Whole grain like Oats, Barley, Brown rice which isn’t processed food)
- Fruits and Vegetables (Cranberries, Carrot, Papaya, Mango, etc.) to provide antioxidants, vitamins, enzymes & fibers)
- Fatty acids as they are crucial for your dogs healthy coats. (Omega 3 & 6)
Types of Dog Foods
Kibbles/ Dry dog food
This is the most famous form of dog food available in the dog food market. It is cheap as well as easy to maintain for a longer time.
Generally, kibbles contain small pellets that are crunchy and of course dry. So while feeding your dog dry dog food, make sure to keep a water bowl beside him/her.
Kibbles have longer shelf-life as there isn’t any moisture inside them. You could pour a bowl of kibble and then wrap it to the store in a dry place.
As these pellets are crunchy, your dog tends to chew the food with their teeth. This lowers the risk of tartar build-up in the mouth and thus helps to maintain good dental health.
This dog food is made by grinding all the ingredients (according to their proportion) and them making it into a dough. This dough is then shaped according to the pellets and cooked at a higher temperature.
- It is convenient and could be carried easily while traveling.
- Cheaper than other types
- Prevents tartar build-up
- Contains less moisture, so your dog needs a good amount of water
- Fast eater dogs might swallow a bunch of pellets without chewing, this could cause an obstruction in dog’s throats
- Cooking ingredients burn off many essential nutrients
Gravy/ Wet dog food
Gravy as the name suggest contains up to 70% of moisture. Moisture is a very important factor in digestion as it prevents constipation.
This type of food is mostly fed to dogs along with kibbles as it increases the meal’s moisture and taste.
Gravies are expensive than kibbles and also comes in a lesser packet due to their lower shelf-life. Once opened they should be consumed within 2 days and must be stored in the refrigerator.
Feeding only gravy is never recommended as your dog need to chew their food. Mixing it with the kibbles are the best way to feed it.
- Contains enough moisture for healthy digestion
- Tastier than Kibble
- Doesn’t involve chewing which is bad for good dental health
- Prone to easy spoilage
- Must store in dry cool space; Refrigerator.
Freeze-Dried & Dehydrated Dog Food
Unlike kibbles and gravy, these foods are not cooked instead processed to remove any moisture.
Well, moisture in any food supports microbial growth in it. This is the reason why gravy has a low shelf-life (flashback).
Now removing moisture from the ingredient can be done with 2 methods, Freeze-dried or Dehydrating.
Freeze-dried is a method where food is kept in a vacuum and the temperature is lowered just below the freezing point.
After reaching that particular temperature, food is slowly heated.
Due to this water content in the food changed directly into a gaseous state from liquid and thus vacuum is used to remove vapor. It removes up to 98-99% of moisture.
Dehydrating is a simple process where food is kept in a dry container and hot, moisture-free air is passed around it.
This dry air pulls the moisture out of food thus making it dehydrated. This process removes up to 90-92% moisture.
Both of these foods require you to pour a scoop into your dog’s bowl, add a little water, and serve.
- Foods are not heated directly in any of these processes, thus preserving all nutrients
- The raw aspect of the meat is preserved
- More nutritious than kibble
- Mixing this food completely in water is necessary. Eating without proper water content could cause stomach bloating.
They are expensive
Raw Dog Food
Some people (mostly those with guard dogs) love to feed raw meals to their dog/s. They believe that by feeding red meat, they are making their dogs more aggressive.
While this is a myth, feeding raw meat could surely have some downside.
Some dog experts believe that feeding this type of food could cause a serious health issue to you and your dogs, while others see it as a natural habitat.
While there is a lot of confusion and debate about this let me clear all your doubts.
Feeding your dog raw meat is better. It makes your dog’s digestion better so you get a firm stool. But there is a risk!
Feeding your dog raw increases their chance of getting parasites and bacteria like salmonella. These bacteria could be spread to the human through dogs as well.
Again feeding it with regular kibbles or gravy will add nutritional benefits to your dog’s meal.
- Good digestibility. It is indicated by the firm stool.
- No bad breath smell.
- Risk of bacteria and parasites to other pets and humans in your dog’s vicinity
Home-cooked dog food
What if you want to walk that extra mile, make that extra effort to feed only fresh foods to your dog.
You could surely feed your dog home-made food, but adding dog food in it will only increase its nutrients.
We won’t talk more about home-made food as we have already written everything above.
- By doing this method, you get a satisfaction feeding fresh food to your dog
- As you are preparing your dog food, you control the quality standards. You also get rid of the additives & by-products used in dog foods.
- It needs efforts, also you could not bring meat or chicken in bulk for a month. You have to bring chicken daily or in 2 days basis.
- Additional kibbles/gravy is needed as they also contain nutrients like omega-3 & 6, fiber, additive vitamins
Prescription/ Veterinary Dog Food
These are the types of dog food given to your pooch when they are suffering from a specific health condition or disease.
For example, your dog could have liver-related issues, obesity, hypoallergenic, urinary (excretion-related issues), or skin issues like yeast infections, allergic dermatitis, Folliculitis, Impetigo, etc.
Despite of being easily available in the market, we would suggest you to speak with your Veterinarian about them.
If you have read our honest review on Royal Canin, you must have seen a number of Veterinary products they offer.
These foods are specifically tailored for dogs having a particular health condition. After your dog getting cured, you could again switch back to normal dog food.
Note: There aren’t any pros and cons in this type of food as they are needed during treatments
Grain V/S Grain-free
There is a lot of confusion about grain-free vs grain.
You must have seen many brands proudly labeling grain-free on their products.
So should you feed your dog a grain-free product or the one with grain in it? Well, we are here to explain to you that.
Grain-free products are generally more expensive than their grain counterpart. Because they include more meat, vegetables, and fruits rather than bulk grain.
It is also true that these grain-free products contain more crude protein. Dogs with grain allergies must use these products.
But, is your dog suffering from grain allergy? Does he require that extra protein?
- Dogs suffering from grain allergies carry symptoms like skin infection & hair loss, red paw pads, inflammation, etc.
- Extra protein is required for the dogs that are more sporty and are getting good exercise daily or are lactating due to newborn puppies.
Is that the condition with your dog? If your answer is yes then you should surely go for grain-free alternatives (which you could find on the first 5 products).
Else, the grain product is not that bad for your dog.
Hope this clears all your doubt about grain-free products. If not, then reach us through our contact form.
I hope you now understand some of the basics of dog food ingredients. This probably allowed you to buy any new dog food stress free.
Remember to watch out for the amount of fillers in the product, if budget is not an issue.

So choose the best dog food as with a good dog comes good responsibility
And no matter what, you were always a superhero to your dog.
