Quinoa is one of the primary ingredients that account for 8%. Quinoa is a pseudo-cereal, originated in South America, contains a good amount of proteins and fiber. It is a healthy option for humans as well as dogs.
These products contain 20% of protein-rich meat products like lamb, quail & duck. Meat has been heated to cook and make them dry, so it loses some of their nutrient values. Besides, it is good for your dog.
As compared to heated meat, dehydrated meat contains more nutrients as their moisture is evaporated using a vacuum. So another 20% of dehydrated Quail, Lamb & Duck is added, making up to 40% meat content in the product.
To make the product grain-free, pea starch is used. Obtained from yellow field peas, it is rich in amylose (carbohydrate) which is non-allergenic and gluten-free. Avoiding gluten could also benefit gastro-intestinal problems or infection caused by gluten.[source]
You could also find dehydrated herring in the product that provides up to 18% of protein and 9% of fats and no carbohydrate[source]. In addition to this, herring is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids and various vitamins.
Besides dehydrated herring, the product contains fish oil (from herring) as it is beneficial for your dog’s coat. Fish oil is a good source of Omega-3 & 6.
The next ingredient, which delights us, is turmeric. Turmeric is already well-known in Indian culture for its anti-inflammatory benefits. We have already discussed in our article that turmeric is safe for the dogs to eat. It helps dogs to cope up with any internal pain we might not be able to detect.
Calcium carbonate is the main source of calcium in this dog food. It provides your dog with the essential nutrients needed to maintain healthy bones.
You could also find a minute (precisely 0.4%) yeast extract. It adds “umami” flavor to the food, just like beer. Yeast could be used as a cheap source of vitamin B, however, due to being high in sodium, it could be the main cause of altering blood pressure. This ingredient is quite shunned by many nutritionists and hence is controversial. [source]
Inulin is also added to the product due to its ability to produce good bowel moments and avoid constipation & diarrhea. Inulin supports the growth of good bacteria, favorable for good excretion. It is also responsible to deplete body ability to accumulate certain kinds of fats.[source]
Psyllium, husk, and seeds, is a form of fiber, also introduce enthusiastically in the product for improving the defecation process.
Fructo-oligosaccharides (0.4%) present, is the Probiotic fiber that helps the good bacteria in the large intestine to facilitate smooth excretion. It is helpful in weight-loss and surprisingly is a sweet!
Glucosamine is a beneficiary supplement for joint pain. Older dogs generally suffer from arthritis, which could be easily countered with this ingredient.[source]
Farmina N&D Quinoa is a good quality product if you are looking for a healthy coat or weight-loss diet for your dog. The product contains an average of 24.75% of crude protein, 12% of fats & 2-8% of fiber.
We would give this product 4.5 star when it comes to quality.
